How to Combine Edge to Edge Designs in Pro-Stitcher

How to Combine Edge to Edge Designs in Pro-Stitcher

October 23, 2026
If you've been staring at your Pro-Stitcher screen this October 2026 wondering whether you can take two of your favorite pantographs and make them play nicely together, the answer is yes — and it's a lot less complicated than most folks expect. We get this question all the time at the shop, usually from a quilter who has stitched the same three edge to edge designs so many times she could draw them in her sleep. Learning how to combine edge to edge designs in Pro-Stitcher is one of those skills that takes an afternoon to learn and then changes how you look at every design file in your library.

We've been helping quilters across Norfolk and Northeast Nebraska get comfortable on their longarms since 1973, and we've walked a lot of people through this exact process at our counter at 422 W Norfolk Ave. So here's the same walk-through we'd give you if you stopped in on a Tuesday morning with your tablet in hand.

START WITH A PLAN BEFORE YOU TOUCH THE SCREEN

Before you open a single file, think about what you actually want the finished quilt to look like. Combining designs usually falls into one of three buckets: stacking two different rows so they alternate down the quilt, nesting a secondary design inside the negative space of a primary one, or blending a simple filler with something more decorative to create a brand new look.

Sketch it on paper if that helps. We're big believers in that. A quick pencil drawing tells you in thirty seconds whether two designs are going to fight each other — and it saves you from picking out stitches later. The Quilt Alliance has long encouraged quilters to document their process and their design choices, and honestly, a sketchbook of what you tried and what worked becomes one of the most useful tools you own.

STEP ONE: OPEN AND POSITION YOUR FIRST DESIGN

Pull up your primary edge to edge design from the Design tab and send it to the workspace. This is the design that will carry the overall rhythm of the quilt, so pick the one with the strongest personality — the feathers, the swirls, the leaves.

Get it sized the way you want for a single row across your quilt top. Use the Modify tab to set your height and width, and pay attention to the repeat. Most edge to edge designs are built to interlock cleanly from row to row, and if you stretch one dimension without thinking about it, you can break that interlock. Lock your aspect ratio while you're learning, then experiment once you're comfortable.

STEP TWO: BRING IN YOUR SECOND DESIGN

Now add your second design to the same workspace. It will come in at its default size and position, which almost never lines up with what you already have, and that's fine. This is where people panic a little, and there's no reason to.

Select the new design and use the Modify tools to scale it to match the width of your first design. Matching the width matters more than matching the height, because the width determines how the rows stack across the quilt. If your primary design is eight inches wide per repeat and your secondary is six, they'll never align, no matter how carefully you position them.

STEP THREE: ALIGN AND NEST THE TWO DESIGNS

With both designs sized to the same width, use the Align tools to stack them. Vertical alignment is where you'll spend most of your time. You want the bottom edge of your first design to sit right at the top edge of your second — or slightly overlapping, if the designs are meant to interlock.

Zoom in. Zoom in more than feels necessary. The difference between a seamless combination and a visible seam line is often an eighth of an inch, and you simply cannot see that at full-quilt zoom. Nudge with the arrow controls rather than dragging with your finger when you're making those final small adjustments.

STEP FOUR: BASELINE AND REPEAT ACROSS THE QUILT

Once your two designs are nested the way you want them, select both and group them. Now you've got one combined unit, and Pro-Stitcher will treat it as a single design for repeating purposes.

Head to the Repeat tab and set your horizontal and vertical repeats based on your quilt dimensions. Check your spacing — Pro-Stitcher will show you how the combined design tiles across the full area. If something looks off, go back and adjust before you baste anything. This is also the moment to look at your start and stop points and make sure you aren't creating a bunch of unnecessary thread breaks.

STEP FIVE: SAVE IT AS A NEW DESIGN

This is the step people skip, and then they're rebuilding the same combination three months later. Save your grouped design with a clear, descriptive name. We tell folks to name files the way they'd label a storage tote — not Design7, but something like FeatherSwirl-8in. Future you will be grateful.

A FEW THINGS WE'VE LEARNED THE HARD WAY

Start simple. Combining two clean geometric designs is much easier than combining two busy florals, and you'll learn the tool faster. Also watch your thread choice — a combined design often has more stitching density than either original, and a heavy thread can make the quilt stiff.

Run a test on a practice sandwich before you put it on the real quilt. Always. Every one of us at the shop has learned that lesson at least once.

And if you're still getting your footing on a Handi Quilter longarm, the Pro-Stitcher combining tools get a whole lot friendlier once someone sits beside you and shows you where everything lives. That's a big part of what we do here — we carry the full Handi Quilter longarm lineup including Pro-Stitcher, and we offer hands-on training that goes well beyond the delivery day. Every machine on our floor has been personally used and tested by our team, so when we tell you how something behaves, it's because we've done it ourselves.

WHEN TO ASK FOR HELP

If you've tried combining designs and the rows just won't interlock, bring your tablet in. Nine times out of ten it's a sizing or repeat setting, and we can spot it in a couple of minutes. We also run classes and a Quilt Club for quilters at every skill level throughout the year, and Pro-Stitcher training is a regular part of what we teach. Class schedules change, so give us a call at (402) 379-0187 for what's coming up.

And if your machine itself is acting up — tension trouble, carriage issues, anything that makes you doubt the design file when the problem is mechanical — our technicians handle all repairs in-house right here in Norfolk. Nothing gets shipped away.

KEY TAKEAWAY: Combining edge to edge designs in Pro-Stitcher comes down to matching the width of both designs, nesting them carefully at high zoom, grouping them, and saving the result as a new file you can reuse.

FAQ

Q: Can I combine more than two edge to edge designs in Pro-Stitcher?
A: Yes, you can layer several designs in the same workspace, though we recommend starting with two until you're comfortable with the sizing and alignment tools. The more designs you stack, the more careful you need to be about stitch density and thread breaks.

Q: Do I need Pro-Stitcher to do edge to edge quilting on a Handi Quilter?
A: No, you can stitch edge to edge designs freehand or with a pantograph and laser, but Pro-Stitcher gives you precise, repeatable results and makes combining designs far easier. We're happy to demo it in the shop so you can see the difference for yourself.

Q: Will combining designs slow down my quilting time?
A: It can, because combined designs usually have more total stitching than either original. We always suggest running a test on a practice sandwich first so you know what to expect on density, time, and thread usage.
