Pfaff Sewing Machine Repair in Nebraska: Common Questions We Hear at the Shop

Pfaff Sewing Machine Repair in Nebraska: Common Questions We Hear at the Shop

October 01, 2026
Every October we see the same thing happen at the counter. The weather turns, quilting season kicks into gear, and folks pull a machine out of the closet that has been sitting since spring. This October 2026 has been no different, and a good share of those machines coming through our door are Pfaffs. They are well-built machines, people hang onto them for decades, and that means they eventually need a little attention. Here are the three questions we get asked most often about Pfaff sewing machine repair in Nebraska, answered the same way we would answer them if you walked into our shop at 422 W Norfolk Ave.

CAN YOU ACTUALLY WORK ON MY PFAFF IF YOU DON'T SELL THEM?

This is the big one, and the answer is yes. We are an authorized dealer for Brother, Janome, and Handi-Quilter, but our repair bench is a different story. Our trained technicians service all major sewing machine brands, and Pfaff is one we see regularly. Some weeks it feels like half the machines on the bench are Pfaffs and Vikings that have been loved hard for twenty or thirty years.

Here is why that matters more than people realize. The fundamentals of a sewing machine have not changed much — timing, tension, hook clearance, feed dog height, motor and belt condition. A technician who understands those fundamentals and has spent years with a screwdriver in hand can diagnose a Pfaff just as accurately as a machine we sell on the floor. What we will not do is pretend to be something we are not. If your Pfaff needs a proprietary part that has to come from the manufacturer, we will tell you straight, help you source it when we can, and give you an honest read on whether the repair makes sense.

The other thing worth knowing is that all of our repairs are done right here in Norfolk. We do not box machines up and ship them off to a regional service center in another state. Your machine stays in our building, our technician works on it, and most repairs get diagnosed the same day they come in. For folks driving in from Wayne, Columbus, O'Neill, West Point, or anywhere else in Northeast Nebraska, that matters. You are not waiting three weeks wondering where your machine is.

MY PFAFF'S IDT ISN'T FEEDING RIGHT — IS THAT AN EXPENSIVE FIX?

The IDT system, Pfaff's built-in walking foot, is the feature most Pfaff owners love most and the one that generates the most questions when something feels off. Quilters especially depend on it, because even feeding through multiple layers is the whole game when you are piecing or quilting on a domestic machine.

Nine times out of ten when someone tells us the IDT is not feeding evenly, the problem is not a broken IDT mechanism. It is something simpler. The IDT may not be engaging fully, the presser foot being used may not be IDT-compatible, the feed dogs may be packed with lint underneath the needle plate, or the presser foot pressure may have drifted. Lint is the quiet villain in most sewing machine problems — we have opened up machines in this shop that had a felt pad of compacted lint under the bobbin area thick enough to hold its own shape.

So before you assume the worst, bring it in and let us look. A thorough cleaning, oiling, and tune-up solves a surprising number of what feel like major mechanical failures. When it is a genuine IDT component issue, we will show you the part, explain what is going on, and give you a clear picture of cost before we do anything. We do not surprise people with an invoice.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I BRING MY PFAFF IN, AND IS IT WORTH IT ON AN OLDER MACHINE?

Our general guidance is once a year for most home sewists, and more often if you are sewing daily, quilting heavily, or working with fabrics that shed a lot of lint — flannel, fleece, and batting are rough on a machine's insides. If your Pfaff has been sitting in storage for several years, bring it in before you start a big project rather than after it has already given you trouble halfway through.

As for whether it is worth servicing an older machine, we almost always say yes with Pfaffs. The Singer Sewing Machine Company's own historical records and broader industry documentation show that well-made sewing machines from the mid-twentieth century onward were engineered for decades of service, and Pfaff built to that standard. A mechanical Pfaff from the 1970s or 1980s that gets cleaned, oiled, re-timed, and adjusted can easily outlast a new budget machine off a big-box shelf. The metal in those machines is simply not something you can buy at that price point anymore.

The honest exception is when a machine needs several expensive proprietary parts at once, or when the electronics on a computerized model have failed and boards are no longer available. In those cases we will lay out the numbers next to what a comparable new or used machine would cost and let you decide. We have been a family-owned shop in Norfolk since 1973, and we have stayed in business this long by telling people the truth about their machines, not by pushing a sale.

WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU DROP YOUR PFAFF OFF

Bring the machine, the power cord, and the foot pedal. If you have the bobbin case, extension table, or a foot you suspect is part of the problem, bring those too. Tell us what the machine is doing — skipping stitches, bird-nesting underneath, grinding, not feeding, whatever it is — and tell us what you were sewing when it started. That last detail helps more than most people expect.

We will look at it, usually the same day, and call you with what we find before any work gets done. You will know what the issue is, what it takes to fix it, and what it costs. If you are not from Norfolk and you are planning a trip in, give us a call at (402) 379-0187 first so we can make sure the timing works for you. Our hours are Monday through Friday 9am to 5:30pm and Saturday 9am to 3pm, and we are closed Sunday.

And once your Pfaff is running right again, if you want to get more out of it, we offer classes and a Quilt Club for all skill levels. A lot of folks discover their machine was fine all along — they just needed someone to show them what it could do.

KEY TAKEAWAY: We repair Pfaff sewing machines in-house right here in Norfolk by trained technicians, usually with same-day diagnosis and no shipping your machine out of state — and most Pfaffs, even older ones, are absolutely worth servicing.

FAQ

Q: Do you repair Pfaff machines even though you are not a Pfaff dealer?
A: Yes. Our technicians service all major sewing machine brands, including Pfaff, and all work is done in-house in Norfolk. We are authorized dealers for Brother, Janome, and Handi-Quilter, but our repair bench is open to every brand.

Q: How long does a Pfaff repair usually take?
A: Most machines are diagnosed the same day they come in, and we call you with findings and cost before any work begins. Actual repair time depends on what is needed and whether any parts have to be ordered.

Q: Is it worth repairing an older Pfaff instead of buying new?
A: In most cases, yes. Older Pfaffs were built with a lot of metal and real engineering, and a proper cleaning, oiling, and tune-up often brings them back to excellent condition. We will give you an honest comparison if we think replacement makes more sense.
